Mercury Plans California Auto Consolidation

Mercury plans to move eligible California personal auto renewal business from California Automobile Insurance Company (CAIC) to its affiliate, Mercury Insurance Company.

The proposed transition would begin with policies expiring on or after April 1, 2027. CAIC would withdraw its personal auto program as the business runs off, while eligible customers would receive renewal offers from Mercury Insurance Company.

The filing proposes no rate change. The two insurers use the same approved rates and rating plan, so changing the underwriting company would not, by itself, change premiums when coverage and other rating characteristics remain the same.

No policies would be transferred or canceled midterm. Customers would receive notice at least 45 days before expiration, and policy and module numbers would remain unchanged.

CAIC’s homeowners and landlord programs are unaffected.

Submitted October 26, the filing remains pending state action.
