Independence Pet Insurance Company is updating rates for its Pets Best pet insurance program in North Carolina, with a proposed 50% increase for medical coverage.
The filing, submitted April 24, 2026, affects 12,798 policyholders and about $10.3 million in written premium, adding roughly $5.1 million.
The update is tied to a transition of a closed block from American Pet Insurance Company. Policies will move to Independence Pet Insurance at renewal, with no changes to waiting periods or pre existing condition rules.
The increase applies only to medical coverage. Accident only and wellness products remain unchanged. To manage the impact, individual increases are capped at 75%, with no decreases.
Pricing updates reflect changes to key rating factors, including age, breed, deductibles, coinsurance, and coverage limits, based on recent experience and modeling. The program continues to offer flexible options, with deductibles from $50 to $2,000, multiple coinsurance levels, and annual limits up to unlimited.
The changes take effect October 2, 2026, for both new and renewal business.
