Elephant Scales Back Legal Assistance Benefit in Maryland

Elephant Insurance is seeking approval to revise its Legal Assistance endorsement for personal auto customers in Maryland.

Under the proposed change, policies purchasing the coverage after the filing’s effective date will no longer receive supplementary benefits, which include a 25% discount on eligible attorney, legal assistant and paralegal fees. Customers who purchased the coverage before that date will retain the discount at renewal and in future policy periods.

The endorsement will continue to cover one district court appearance per insured per policy period for eligible misdemeanor traffic offenses. Alcohol- and controlled substance-related offenses are excluded.

Elephant is also updating its Maryland amendatory endorsement to remove an exclusion involving bodily injury to the policyholder or a relative, which the insurer said does not apply.

The filing was submitted on July 17, 2026, with an effective date upon approval. Maryland regulators deemed the submission incomplete because Elephant paid $125 instead of the required $250 filing fee and requested the remaining amount by July 31.
