United States Fire Insurance Company, part of Crum & Forster, is shutting down its Companion Horse insurance program in Wisconsin, marking a full withdrawal of the niche pet insurance offering as the book transitions to a new carrier.
The move follows a previously arranged shift of the business to Independence American Insurance Company, which will take over as the new underwriter. As part of the transition, existing policyholders were offered replacement coverage under IAIC-approved filings.
The program was relatively small, with 371 policies and about $133,686 in written premium at the start of the transition. Nonrenewals began on August 1, 2025 and will run through July 31, 2026, with full withdrawal effective August 1, 2026 for remaining renewals.
United States Fire will continue to service claims for coverage periods prior to each policy’s nonrenewal date, ensuring continuity for existing obligations.
