Lemonade Launches Homeowners, Renters, and Condo Insurance Program in Virginia

Lemonade received approval from Virginia regulators for a new homeowners insurance program that includes coverage for owner-occupied homes, renters, and condominium owners. The filing marks Lemonade’s initial entry into Virginia’s homeowners market and was approved with an effective date of February 18, 2019.

The program introduced Virginia-specific homeowners (HO3), renters (HO4), and condominium (HO6) policy forms, along with a range of endorsements and optional coverages. Available endorsements include water backup coverage, scheduled personal property coverage, identity fraud expense coverage, trust endorsements, increased personal property limits, home systems protection, and coverage for portable electronic equipment.

The filing also incorporated several exclusions and underwriting tools, including swimming pool, trampoline, and canine liability exclusions, as well as an “Absolute Lemonade” endorsement and increased rental-period coverage option.

According to the filing description, Lemonade submitted the program as its first homeowners filing in Virginia through consulting firm Perr&Knight. The filing was approved and filed by the Virginia Bureau of Insurance after multiple rounds of regulatory review and amendments.

The approved filing included a new homeowners manual and rating structure tailored for Virginia risks, alongside adoption of numerous ISO forms and endorsements.
