Colorado Warns of Errors in AI-Generated Insurance Complaints

The Colorado Division of Insurance says it is receiving more AI-generated consumer complaints containing significant errors about state laws and policy details, potentially delaying complaint resolution.

The regulator encouraged consumers to describe their experiences in their own words and consult its Consumer Services Team, an insurance agent or a licensed attorney for accurate information about coverage and Colorado law.

The warning accompanied the division’s annual complaint and recoveries report, released October 28, covering July 2025 through June 2026.

The division reported recovering $15.8 million for consumers, including approximately $5.4 million related to homeowners insurance complaints and $3.3 million related to auto insurance complaints. Its Consumer Services Team also fielded 17,283 calls.

Individual cases included an insurer paying a homeowner approximately $82,568 for roof damage after the division intervened, and the reinstatement of a long-term care policy following payment and communication issues. The division also reported saving consumers more than $112,000 by enforcing required zero-copay coverage for diabetic supplies under Colorado Option plans.

“Our Consumer Services Team puts in the work every day to get Coloradans the support they need. Communication errors, missed insurer payments, and wrongly denied claims put stress on Coloradans during already difficult times. Our Consumer Services Team is here to help and I encourage anyone with a question or insurance issue to reach out. Thank you to our hard working team!” – Colorado Insurance Commissioner Michael Conway.
