Montana regulators have reviewed and filed CARFAX Advisory Services’ Vehicle Build Score model for use in private passenger auto insurance.

The model assigns vehicles scores ranging from 100 to 900 based on characteristics including vehicle dimensions, drivetrain, safety and convenience features, vehicle type and value. Lower scores represent higher expected loss costs.

CARFAX developed separate models for third-party liability, first-party liability, collision and comprehensive coverage using more than 23 million earned exposures from policy years 2016 through 2022.

Insurers subscribing to the service may incorporate the scores into new or existing rating plans, although each carrier is expected to develop its own rating factors based on its experience.
